The Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area has recently announced a delightful discovery – a den of adorable mountain lion cubs! These cute little creatures were born to a three-year-old mountain lion named P-54, and the litter includes two male cubs, P-82 and P-83, and one female cub, P-84. Experts believe that this was P-54’s first time giving birth. The revelation of these charming kittens not only brings happiness to our hearts but also provides hope for genetic diversity in the region. It has been more than four months since P-63, the only adult male mountain lion with a radio collar in Santa Monica Mountains, was seen hanging out with P-54 for two days in a row, hinting at a possible mating event. After approximately 90 days, researchers noticed GPS signals indicating that either P-54 had consumed prey or given birth, which led to the assumption that P-63 may have fathered the newborn kittens.
